Expectant moms in the Greater Toronto Area will soon benefit from the launch of a new birth centre, expected to open in summer 2013. The Toronto Birth Centre will bring together GTA midwives in a community partnership, offering more choice as to where women can deliver healthy babies, while helping free hospital beds to focus on high-risk births. The centre expects to assist with between 450 and 500 births annually. Creating birth centres is part of the McGuinty government's Action Plan for Health Care and its commitment to provide Ontarians with the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
“This announcement is great news for GTA families. Giving women more choice in where they deliver their babies is a healthy idea. By giving expecting mothers the ability to access quality, community-based health care we also help to ensure that our hospitals have the beds to focus on high-risk births.” --Dr. Helena Jaczek, M.P.P., Oak Ridges – Markham
“This is great news for expectant mothers in Markham as they consider their options for delivery. A new birth centre serving the GTA will enhance health care in Ontario by providing safe and cost-effective community-based care for low-risk pregnancies.” - Michael Chan, M.P.P., Markham-Unionville
“This birth centre will give women more choice on where they can deliver healthy babies. As part of Ontario’s Action Plan for Health Care, we are moving more routine procedures out of hospitals and into specialized not-for-profit clinics like birth centres, where evidence shows that high quality care can be provided for better value.” — Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care
